Uplifting Bombay Movement is a student-led project that hopes to reduce the human impact of annual flooding in Mumbai’s most vulnerable communities. Constructed on the belief that true disaster resilience starts with tapping into local knowledge and action, UBM hopes to help support underserved individuals with the resources, tools and training they need to better anticipate, respond to and recover from the challenges associated with floods.
To do the same, the initiative is dedicated towards fulfilling a three-pronged approach which includes conducting in-person field research to understand current difficulties, developing and distributing free-of-cost mitigation kits that are tailored to these needs and hosting interactive sessions to strengthen and quite literally, uplift rapid-response capacities among participants. In this way, it hopes to close the gaps between large-scale policies and everyday vulnerability; and consequently empower people across the beloved city of dreams to stay safer, more informed and prepared when the next high tide comes around.
