As an initial measure, in July 2025, UBM conducted an in-depth survey in and around urban Mumbai slums and low-lying areas, specifically those within the Borivali and Malad neighborhoods, closely interacting with the local community to understand existing concerns in preparedness for flood prevention and mitigation. The 20-question survey aimed to gauge the challenges faced due to floods annually with regard to housing and safety, health, and basic access to everyday resources. Additionally, it also tried to understand how families manage the aftermath of flooding and how this affects their wellness and coping.
Following the survey, UBM hosted a workshop session in partnership with the Rotaract Club in Borivali, Mumbai covering topics like basic disaster response protocols with specific modules on flood preparedness, mitigation and post-flood coping with an audience of vulnerable families. The session delved into explaining specifics like the safe use of electrical appliances and evacuation strategies as well as general health, safety and resilience tips alongside interactive activities and a Q&A segment to better prepare attendees for rapid-response scenarios.
In August 2025, we also launched an online fundraising campaign through the crowdfunding platform Milaap, to raise 50,000 INR to support both - a flood-resilience centric distribution drive and the ongoing initiatives of the Rotaracy Club in supporting affected communities during floods and throughout the year in their aftermath.
Utilizing a portion of the funds from the Uplift Mumbai Fundraiser, in late August 2025, the project saught to organize a distribution drive of low-cost, community-based flood mitigation kits that included reusable waterproof storage bags, tarpaulin sheets, umbrellas, and emergency torches and raincoats for children. The initiative targeted at-risk, urban-slum families in low-lying areas identified during the survey stage.
Finally, in September 2025, we authored a white paper titled “Deconstructing the Repercussions of Monsoons and Floods: Towards Safer Monsoon Seasons,” drawing insights from existing case studies and the initial survey. The paper analyzes all the major challenges faced by urban slum residents in developing flood resilience within Mumbai, sheds light on the scope for state and society intervention as well as possible policy suggestions to tackle the repercussions of such unpredictable heavy downpours.
